Carolyn began practicing yoga in 2003 exclusively with workout videos at home. Initially intimidated by yoga studios and afraid that her body wasn't appropriate for yoga, she didn't take a studio class for the first five years of her practice. She studied vinyasa yoga in Wake Up Yoga’s 250-hour Foundational Teacher Training program, has studied Yin Yoga with Corina Benner, and Restorative Yoga with Felicia Graham Comisar. Carolyn believes that people are made of magic — little piles of starlight who navigate the world in cages of flesh and bones. She teaches from a body positive perspective and works with students in their bodies exactly as they are today.
What’s your motivation for teaching yoga?
When I started practicing, I had never seen a big bodied person teaching yoga. I want to show up in my body and maybe help other people see that yoga isn't just for young, thin, super able bodied people.
Where are you originally from and what brought you to Philadelphia?
I'm originally from the Detroit area. I found my way to Philly by randomly pointing to it on a map. The very next day, I came for my first visit. Never have I met people as passionate and interesting as my South Philly neighbors. As a transplant, I am constantly amazed by the window displays in the homes here!
What do you savor most in life?
The people I love. Nothing brings me more joy than hosting my family and friends.
